Jacob Sweeney worked
for a Mr. Allen who owned a furniture store located opposite the recently
removed railway tracks in Yarmouth North. The railway company at
the time (approx. 1856) needed the Allen land to lay tracks across Main
Street. He decided to sell his business to Jacob Sweeney, who was
16 or 17 years old. Jacob Sweeney had to move the building
and locate it on the present site. In 1894 or 1895 the house
just north of the present store was moved from the airport corner.
They were able to get the house to the center of Main Street (near Starrs
Road Corner) before dark. On that very night Jacob Sweeney store
burnt to the ground. The firefighters responding to the call, came
onto the house left in the center of the road and were momentarily disorientated.
After World War I, the Rogers family grandfather, G.O. Rogers purchased the furniture business from V.S. Sweeney. The owners at that time were Claude L. Sanderson, Lewis Chipman, Jean M. Godfry, Edgar B. Ehrgott and G.O.Rogers. The business was
run at a profit during the roaring twenties, and even declared a profit
during the depression years. Frank Rogers joined the firm in 1949.
His sons have joined the firm at different times during the 1980's, and
in the fall of 1989 a major expansion and renovation took place which has
made Rogers Furniture
rival of any store in the Maritimes for showroom size, quality of inventory,
quality of display and quality of service. Rogers Furniture
now has over 26,000 sq.ft. of retail, display
& storage floor space.
